Polish EAS Market Expands with National Economy and Manufacturing Sector, says IDC
Warsaw

August 29, 2006

Spending on enterprise application software (EAS) rose a healthy 22.1% to more than $165 million in Poland in 2005 and will rise 17% this year. According to a recent IDC study, economic growth was and will be key to the market's continuing expansion. Poland has become a primary destination for manufacturers, GDP continues to exceed the EU average, and inflation is falling. Moreover, growing exports and the inflow of EU funds has generated a capital that has allowed companies to kick off business improvement investments, which includes IT and EAS.

SAP was again the market EAS leader in Poland in 2005 and will be again this year. The German giant was followed by Oracle, local player Comarch, and IFS. Together, these four vendors captured more than two-thirds of EAS revenue.

"The presence of large international EAS players and the difficult market conditions of 2002-2003 spurred local vendors to implement management change, streamline and focus sales and marketing, and improve the overall quality of their products, " says Tomasz Sloniewski, Senior Analyst, Software, IDC CEMA. "Comarch is a case study in the effectiveness of this refined approach, moving up in the ranking from last year. Barring any major acquisitions, local EAS players should continue to gain share in the next two to three years."

Discrete manufacturing took the lead as the largest industrial sector investing in EAS in Poland last year. Process manufacturing dropped to second and utilities was again third. Together, these three vertical markets accounted for 47% of EAS spending in Poland in 2005.

"The outlook for discrete manufacturing is rock solid and IDC expects EAS spending growth in the sector to exceed the total market average over the next few years," says Sloniewski. "The country's well educated yet inexpensive workforce and favorable geographic location have drawn in manufacturers from the West; their new factories generate considerable revenue for EAS, which has become de rigueur for managing everything from account and HR to supply chains and logistics."

Enterprise resource management accounted for more than half of EAS spending in Poland in 2005. As in previous years, accounting was the most popular module, followed by human resources management. Supply chain management was the second largest area and business analytics the third.

"Although ERM will remain the largest functional area for the foreseeable future," says Sloniewski, "business analytics is the area to watch. Vendors often include basic BA modules with full ERP solutions, which has helped spread awareness about the benefits of BA and has spurred additional investments.

IDC's Poland Enterprise Application Software 2006–2010 Forecast and 2005 Vendor Shares (IDC# ER04N) provides a detailed overview of the Polish market for high-end integrated EAS packaged software products. The study includes detailed qualitative and quantitative information, analysis, and forecasts. It delineates the defining characteristics of the Polish EAS market, shows which segments are investing in EAS solutions, and notes how future spending will affect market development. The study covers the primary EAS operating environments, how sales will affect third-party hardware and software vendors, and how vendors across the IT spectrum (hardware platform vendors, database vendors, operating system vendors, and enterprise application vendors) can capitalize on the continued expansion. In addition to noting how political and economic conditions specific to Poland will affect the market, the study also tracks and analyzes leading players.
