New Models for Old Networks: IDC on Voice and Fixed Lines
Andrew Hicks, Senior Research Analyst, Telecommunications, IDC CEMA

Recently IDC-CEMA's Telecommunications department has been examining telecom's most traditional assets: voice calling and fixed-line networks. These businesses usually operate in the shadow cast by newer technology and higher-growth services, but they still represent a sizable pot of revenue that can be captured or defended with the proper strategies.

Over the next two months, we will publish a series of reports analyzing different segments of this market:

The success of IP television in remonetizing fixed-line networks is obvious from the high level of competition in the area. Building on data from its offices throughout the CEE region, IDC has plotted the size of the market in its Central and Eastern European IPTV and Pay TV Services 2008-2012 Forecast, due in May.

Telecom was built on voice, and though voice usage keeps rising, voice services departments struggle with declining revenues. But in some markets, subscriber loss is flattening or even reversing slightly. IDC surveys best practices in Central/Eastern Europe as well as the Middle East and Africa in its Voice Services Strategies for Incumbent Operators reports for each region. Both reports come out in May.

Building on themes from these two reports, IDC issues its Triple Play Pricing and Product Positioning Challenges report in June. The report puts a variety of multiplay models through a SWOT analysis and finds that trends such as fixed-mobile substitution and the commoditization of broadband may begin to counteract the successful bundling trend of the past few years.

Also in June, IDC releases its Central and Eastern European VoIP Services 2008-2012 Forecast. As with voice services in general, VoIP usage will continue to go up, but revenues may not follow. This forecast segments the market by geography, industry, and business size to reveal the most promising areas for investment.
