Feature Story
During 2008, the U.S. housing crisis and ensuing collapse of several financial institutions sparked a global credit crunch. These developments unleashed a ripple affect that will negatively impact most economies and telecom spending around the world over the next 12 months. IDC's Telebriefing on January 15. 2009, will provide a comprehensive view of the impact the financial crisis will have on telecom services spending around the world..
IDC Press Center
The impact of the global economic crisis will spread to the mobile phone market resulting in a downturn in shipments in 2009. According to IDC, total mobile phone volumes will be 1.9% lower in 2009 than 2008 levels, the first downturn in annual shipment volumes since 2001 when shipments declined 2.3%. Over the past several years, the mobile phone market has enjoyed double-digit annual growth due to an increased emphasis on emerging markets. However, emerging market growth has been steadily slowing as these markets mature. IDC now expects worldwide growth to be just 7.1% in 2008 before slipping into negative growth in 2009. IDC's EMEA Quarterly Network Tracker shows a quarter- over-quarter increase of 4% of network equipment spending to reach $3.8 billion in the third quarter of 2008, and a decline of 5% compared to the same period in 2007. However, when excluding residential equipment, the networking market shows a more positive picture, with 8% quarterly growth and a decline of 1% compared to the same period last year.
IDC CEMA Communications Studies
This study provides analysis of the key market trends for data communications services and technologies in four Central European countries – the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia. Additionally, leading operators are analyzed by the service types they offer and the competitive challenges they face in their respective markets. This report examines the current state of voice services and legacy fixed-line networks in the Middle East, with additional information on recent trends in Turkey. It charts the changes in voice channels over the past four years, analyzes the effects of separating voice from the underlying network connection in project planning, and recommends strategies for increasing marginal revenues and uncovering new revenue streams. This IDC event flash presents our opinion on Cisco's latest partner initiatives, as outlined at its Channel Exchange event in Lisbon on November 6–7, 2008. Cisco's latest efforts in partner collaboration and in the small and medium-sized business (SMB) market were competing for attention with the financial crisis, but the company presented a series of steps it is taking to bolster its partners' finances and access to talent and to restore confidence to its channel ecosystem.
