The Impact of the Global Economic Crisis on Worldwide Telecom Spending

During 2008, the U.S. housing crisis and ensuing collapse of several financial institutions sparked a global credit crunch. These developments unleashed a ripple affect that will negatively impact most economies and telecom spending around the world over the next 12 months. This IDC Telebriefing will provide a comprehensive view of the impact the financial crisis will have on telecom services spending around the world.

In response to the downturn, IDC implemented a comprehensive review of global telecom spending. In the fall of 2008, IDC surveyed consumers and enterprises around the world and analyzed public industry financial data. The goal of this IDC Telebriefing is to provide service providers, equipment vendors, and end-users with insight into how the telecom sector will change during 2009 and beyond. IDC will present data from the most recent Worldwide Telecom Services Database and other published research, and will highlight the segments and regions most impacted by the economic crisis. Key issues related to the impact of the financial crisis include:

  • What will be the effect on telecom services spending during 2009? Is telecoms insulated at all against the downturn?
  • Which services & sectors will be impacted the most? Consumers and businesses, fixed and mobile, etc.
  • Which regions will be impacted the most while the total market is still growing?
  • How quickly will markets rebound? Is this a dip or an adjustment to patterns? Is demand fundamentally strong?
  • Will the markets rebound to pre-crisis growth levels?

Speakers:

  • Chris Lewis, Group Vice President, International Telecoms and Networking
  • Courtney Munroe, Group Vice President, Worldwide Telecommunications
  • Mark Winther, Group Vice President and Consulting Partner, Worldwide Telecommunications
