Continuous Information and Database Services Enhance business with high-impact intelligence

Feature story
Recently several IDC Telecoms analysts attended Cisco's annual Emerging Markets conference in London. Throughout the discussions of regional strategy and target verticals, it became increasingly clear that Cisco, still best known for heavy network equipment, is committed to organizing itself around business transformation, a shift that holds the promise of increased consulting benefits for clients in emerging markets.

Despite escalating buzz and hype around the unified communications (UC) solutions from Microsoft and IBM, these solutions have had minimal impact on the growth of IP telephony lines, which recorded shipments of 30.9 million in 2007, a new study from IDC reveals. Survey results confirm that SMBs, especially midmarket companies, have been rather dynamic in terms of IT uptake of new technologies and adoption has been increasing alongside a greater awareness of what the IT market offers. In this context, voice and data convergence solutions have started to grow in acceptance. Nearly a quarter of the world's population - roughly 1.4 billion people - will use the Internet on a regular basis in 2008. This number is expected to surpass 1.9 billion unique users, or 30% of the world's population, in 2012, according to IDC's Digital Marketplace Model and Forecast. IDC announced the results of a regional survey exploring the use and impact of online advertising in Asia, which showed that Internet ads are seen as informative but often relatively weak in prompting consumers to make a buying decision. The survey, which included both Asian consumers and Asian enterprises, is the second round of a series of surveys that IDC is conducting in 2008 to examine the impact of Web 2.0 on Asian enterprises and consumers. New Zealand Communications will generate much needed competition in the New Zealand mobile industry, but will struggle to win market share beyond 3%-5% of subscribers, according to IDC New Zealand. The current economic crisis has not affected U. S. Internet advertising spending: Total revenue increased by 23.9% to $7.1 billion in the first quarter (1Q08) compared to $5.7 billion in 1Q07. IDC expects Internet advertising to continue to expand rapidly during 2008 even though advertising spending across all media will most likely be cut back.
