Nordic IP Communications Vendors Way Ahead of Their Customers, Says IDC

COPENHAGEN, August 13, 2007 — According to IDC the Nordic IP telephony market is continuing to show very strong growth. The market is now passing the first hurdle of getting IP solutions up and running and getting ready to jump the next hurdle, which is about IP applications and integration of IP communications into an overall communications infrastructure to ensure, among other things, a common communications interface.

The market is overflowing with concepts and new buzz terms, however, which tends to confuse end users rather than spur demand. "The vendor ecosystem should spend more time educating and explaining to end user enterprises the opportunities of the converged IT and telecoms world to avoid creating overlarge gaps between vendors and end users," said Brian Troelsen, research manager at IDC Nordic.

The market is further characterized by consolidation efforts in terms of both larger companies, such as the Nordic incumbents acquiring minor systems integrators and solutions specialists, while smaller providers are forced to leave the market or join forces with other similar companies to gain economies of scale.

"Vendors are currently doing a series of elimination rounds. Previously, market growth was sufficient to uphold the current number of vendors, but as market growth starts to return to normal rates, we'll see the weakest forced to leave the market. We are further witnessing a paradigm shift, as vendors need to focus on applications, software services, and IT/mobile integration rather than just setting up IP telephony infrastructure. This change management process implies building up new competencies and changing internal business process, which is further a challenge ," said Troelsen.
