Continuous Information and Database Services Enhance business with high-impact intelligence

Feature story
Recently Francis Hook, our telecoms analyst in Kenya, published Submarine Internet Cables: The Race to Connect East Africa, our first report on the region’s impending shift in connectivity options and their related business opportunities. To date East Africa has been forced to make do with expensive satellite broadband, a situation that creates scarcities in communications, education, and market opportunities.

Applications processors and media coprocessors experienced another year of solid growth in 2007 as the chipset technology that enables multimedia has become more mature and chipset pricing has declined. This has enabled multimedia capabilities to quickly spread from high-end mobile phones into a myriad of mobile and consumer electronics (CE) devices, according to IDC. Multimedia functionality can now be found in most mid-range and even some entry-level phone segments, as well as devices ranging from PMPs, handheld gaming platforms, MIDs, toys, PNDs, and a variety of medical and industrial devices. The networking equipment landscape is full of innovative and exciting product development that is seeing a technology revolution taking place across both the consumer and business markets, a new IDC report has found.
IDC CEMA Communications Studies
This study describes the sub-sea Internet cables that will replace expensive satellite broadband in East Africa, speculates on the probable winners of the cable-laying race, describes several likely consequences of the upcoming flood of inexpensive broadband, and identifies the cable stakeholders most likely to benefit. Central Europe's VoIP services market has successfully completed the initial development stage and is now moving to the next. The supply side of the market is now crowded, and operators are shifting focus to actions aimed at attracting as many customers as possible. The main audience to target is PSTN/ISDN users. Though VoIP services still lack quality compared with PSTN/ISDN services, VoIP operators have a huge advantage in pricing. The market share of VoIP services will therefore increase quickly.
